I had an interesting conversation with Bob Boucher about the water pollution recently discovered near Scofield Town Park in North Stamford, Connecticut. I had trouble finding information on the subject, so I wrote up our conversation in case others might find it helpful. Feel free to contribute additional information via comments.

Who is Bob?

Bob Boucher (pronounced “Booshay”) lives near Scofield Park. He has helped start the North Stamford Concerned Citizens for the Environment organization, whose mission is to ensure safe water in Stamford and act as watchdog for this problem.

What is the problem?

Several wells in North Stamford have been contaminated with pesticides. Digging online suggests contamination with Dieldrin, chlordane, heptachlor epoxide, trans-nonachlor, and CIS-nonachlor. People believe that the aquifer near Scofield Park has been contaminated. At this point, no soil or air contamination has been detected.

How widespread is the problem?

Contamination has been detected within the area from Briar Brae Road on the north to Cascade Road on the east to Wire Mill Road on the south to Hunting Ridge Road on the west.

What is causing the problem?

At this point no one knows. There are three main theories. The original theory was that the landfill under Scofield Park has been leaking. Another theory is that the experimental laboratory at Bartlett Arboretum overused pesticides. A third theory is that a termite removal company has been over-applying pesticides.

How far might the contamination spread?

At this point, no one knows. If the rogue termite removal company theory turns out to be true, pesticides could be distributed as broadly as the company has operated (throughout Fairfield county or beyond).

How do you find out if a well has been contaminated?

The well should be tested for volatile organic compounds (VOC), heavy metals, pesticides, and potability.

What is the problem with being exposed to the contaminated water?

Increased risk of cancer.

What types of exposure are problematic?

Most: drinking, bathing, gardening, lawn sprinkling, etc.

How can this problem be mitigated?

A partial measure is to install a charcoal filter for the well. Long-term, Stamford is working to extend city water into North Stamford, which should solve most of the problem. The plan is to levy an additional tax on North Stamford residents to pay for the extension.

What is the impact on real estate in the area?

Some homes in the area have sold recently. Some offers have fallen through when people learn about the problem. Some banks in the area will not lend money for real estate with detected contamination.

The standard explanation is that your brain is so conditioned to see your partner that it continues to see your partner after he/she is gone. What do you think? Do you believe this answer? (Could we come up with an experiment to test this?) Is there anything else going on here?
